Sacramento news reports that two people were killed at the Marysville Raceway Park after a racecar careened off the track and into pit row. The two victims of the car accident were a 68-year-old-man and a 14-year-old boy.
According to reports, about 6 or 7 cars were on the track when the car left the field. It is unknown what caused the crash, but a representative notes, ""There must have been a mechanical problem … The car didn't slow down." The two injured were affiliated with one of the cars or drivers.
While car racing is known to be dangerous, many factors other than driver error may lead to serious personal injuries or fatalities. For example, where a crash occurs as the result of a vehicle malfunction or a defective part, the car manufacturer may be found negligent and held responsible for damages. Further, where the racetrack itself fails to provide adequate warnings and barriers for spectators, the owner of the racetrack may be held responsible for the harm caused by maintaining an unreasonably dangerous course. If you have been injured while at a car racing event, it's a good idea to consult with a top California personal injury attorney.
In this instance, the Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol are still investigating the crash in an effort to determine its cause.
While raceway injuries to fans are infrequent, when they occur they are often serious, if not fatal. The Marysville raceway deaths occurred just a few weeks after 30 fans suffered personal injuries at the Daytona International Speedway. The victims were hit with large tire chunks after a car scraped against the fencing lining the track. A few years ago fans at a Talladega Nascar race, several fans were injured and the crowd was sprayed with debris when a car plowed into the front-stretch fence. And tragically in 2010, 8 people were injured in a California off-road truck racing accident.
Although some risk may be expected as spectators at sporting events, where the level of risk is unreasonable as the result of inadequate safety measures or other negligence, it may be possible to recover compensation for your injuries.
