Truck Driver Fatigue May Have Led To Fatal Accident

An investigation continues into the fatal northern California tour bus accident that claimed the life of a 33-year-old man from Parlier, California. Two dozen other passengers also suffered serious personal injuries. Reports provide that the bus rolled over, resting upside down on a frontage road. The injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals, with injuries ranging from mild to severe, and including such conditions as head and neck injuries, brain injuries and cuts and bruises.

According to reports, earlier in the day the bus had struck a Denny's restaurant in Red Bluff. No one was injured in that accident.

In this instance, evidence at the crash site suggests that driver fatigue may have been a factor.

Each year truck crashes are responsible for killing over 5,000 people and injuring another 150,000 more across the country. Roughly one quarter of all passenger vehicle deaths in multiple-vehicle collisions involve a large truck. The risk of crashes that result in death or serious injuries substantially increases when commercial drivers experience fatigue as the result of excessive daily and weekly work hours. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), more than 750 people die and 20,000 more are injured each year due directly to fatigued commercial vehicle drivers.

All factors involved in this accident remain under investigation.
