San Francisco news reports that numerous investigations have begun into determining all of the factors that led to the deadly FedEx/bus collision that claimed 10 lives, five of them high school students from Southern California. Initial reports indicate that the accident occurred when the FedEx truck crossed the centerline and hit the bus head on. A fire engulfed both the truck and bus. Both the CHP and the NTSB are now studying factors including how the bus accident occurred, what caused the FedEx truck to cross the line and whether the truck was on fire before it collided with the bus.
Often, independent investigators are used to perform "accident reconstruction" and are instrumental in investigating, analyzing, and drawing conclusions about the causes and events during a vehicle collision, as well as identifying causes and contributing factors in different types of collisions, including the role of the driver(s), vehicle(s), roadway and the environment.
As reported by ABC News, San Francisco, one of the tests being used here to evaluate the accident is called a "skid test," which is frequently used to in California car accident cases in an effort to reconstruct just was happened prior to the accident. The skid test looks at a variety of factors such as the amount of friction, the "sticking power of the vehicles on asphalt" to help identify as closely as possible the pre-impact speed of the vehicles involved.
Other tests to be performed include toxicology tests to determine whether either driver was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and a search of the drivers cell phone records. Cell phone records may provide evidence of driver distraction.
