Bay Bridge Accident Under Investigaton

An official investigation is now being conducted into the causes behind the Bay Bridge accident last weekend. Specifically, the court is looking into the conduct of the ship pilot who was in charge of navigating the oil tanked that side swiped the Bay Bridge. If he is found at fault for the accident, he could lose his license. The California Board of Pilot Commissioners examination is supposed to last 90 days.

Another investigation by the Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board has also begun. This joint investigation into fault and potential negligence is expected to take longer.

The Bay Bridge accident caused more than $2 million damages, but no personal injuries were involved. The ship – the Overseas Reymar – knocked into the western-span tower closest to Yerba Buena Island.

According to reports, the ship had been warned it was off course, prior to the incident. However, it is unknown how much warning had been provided. A representative notes that any speculation that the ship's pilot is at fault is "highly premature."

The investigation may lead to no action or to the suspension or revocation of the ship pilot's license.

On the morning of the accident, the Overseas Reymar changed course at the last minute in heavy fog and steered for an opening between a different set of bridge towers from the one the pilot had initially intended to go through, according to the president of the San Francisco Pilots Association.

A number of other factors that may be involved include:

• Defective navigational devices

• Fog

• Water currents and tides

• Human error
