Oakland Car/Pedestrian Accident Highlights Dangerous Intersection

A recent tragic collision at the intersection of Fruitvale and Brookdale Avenues in Oakland is raising questions about the need for safety improvements. In this instance, a driver ran into three children crossing the street in the crosswalk. All three were taken to the hospital for treatment of serious personal injuries, and now have been released. Thankfully none were killed, but those familiar with the intersection believe that it is just a matter of time, as the crosswalk is not sufficiently visible and over an the course of the last several years, numerous incidents have occurred there.

The owner of a nearby restaurant states that this is the third pedestrian accident in three years, and that countless car accidents have occurred at that intersection, as well as many pets being killed while in the roadway. He is calling for changes to be made such as the installation of blinking lights in order to call attention to the area.

When pedestrian accidents occur, it is important to examine all of the contributing factors. In some situations, where the design of a roadway is a contributing cause of the accident, the municipality or entity responsible for the roadway may be held responsible for roadway negligence. The accident remains under investigation.
