Football Accident Underscores Dangers Of Head Injuries

A recent football accident has raised concerns about sports' safety. According to reports, a 16-year-old high school football player died following an on-field collision. No wrongdoing is asserted, and the superintendent has commented – "I think it was the result of a typical football play. It was just a freak accident." Despite this, the accident will be fully investigated in terms everything from the type of hit to the type of helmets and equipment the players were using. The football player likely died as the result of a head injury.

A recent study in the Journal of Sports Medicine reveals that an average of 12 high school and college players die every year, and concerns about hard hits in football and other sports have grown recently with the highly-publicized concussion lawsuits filed by NFL and NCAA players. These lawsuits allege negligence on the part of the associations and coaches for a variety of reasons, including failing to disclose known dangers of concussions and "hard hits," and not being sufficiently proactive in protecting players. This includes sending players back into the game too soon following a hit and concealing the long-term effects of head injuries.

Further, numerous concussion lawsuits have been filed against helmet manufacturers asserting that the manufacturers bear responsibility for brain injuries, concussions and other football injuries based on theories of product liability. Such lawsuits claim that the helmets were not adequately designed to protect against concussions and that helmet manufacturers failed to warn about the dangers of concussions.

While no negligence has been implicated in this instance, this accident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers involved in many contact sports.
