8 Injured in San Francisco Pedestrian Accident

San Francisco news reports that a driver ran a red light in San Francisco’s Westwood Park neighborhood, causing 8 pedestrians to suffer personal injuries. Several of the victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The accident remains under investigation.

For the last several years, San Francisco has been working to combat the number of pedestrian accidents and fatalities, after the number of pedestrian deaths has increased recently. This has led to joint efforts among several city agencies, including the City Planning Department, the MTA, and the Public Health Department. Several intersections have been identified as among the most dangerous, and efforts have been made to address these areas. However, one of the toughest challenges is to eliminate distraction – whether drivers not paying attention to their surroundings, or bicyclists/pedestrians not being alert.

In this instance, initial reports indicate that the driver failed to obey the rules of the road, running a red light and injuring the pedestrians, as well as striking another vehicle, hitting a parking meter, and running into a tree.
